Hi, I’m Ashley!

Founder, owner, and head dog lover at Barkley & Co.

I've spent most of my life surrounded by animals. Over the years I've fostered dogs, volunteered in shelters, raised a family of animal lovers, and built a home that's rarely without a wagging tail nearby. When I'm not caring for dogs, you'll usually find me at my desk editing photos, tending to my daughter’s backyard flock of chickens, or spending time with my family and our ever-growing collection of animals.

Dogs have a way of bringing people together and one of my favorite parts of this work is getting to know both the dogs and the people who love them. Barkley & Co. is built around that connection.

leaders of the pack

Lulu

Retired racing greyhound, 9 years old

Lulu is our retired racing greyhound, though "racing" may be a generous description of her career. She retired young because she was more interested in bouncing than winning. Today, Lulu enjoys the finer things in life: soft beds, sunny spots, leisurely naps, and accompanying Jeffery on daily squirrel surveillance missions around the yard.

Lulu is sweet, gentle, and endlessly polite. She's also a bit of a nervous nelly who approaches new situations, and especially treats with cautious suspicion. She has learned that treats are often paired with requests, and she'd prefer a chance to review the terms and conditions first.

She's happiest living a quiet life with her family, sharing her space with canine guests, and reminding everyone that kindness and good manners are always in style.

Jeffrey

26lb Super-mutt, 6 years old?

Jeffrey is our resident security officer, neighborhood watch captain, and full-time squirrel surveillance specialist. He is truly a big dog in a little dog’s body. He has a hard, bristly exterior with a heart of gold and a lot to say about what goes on outside the window. As my velcro dog, he's happiest when he knows exactly where I am and what I'm doing at all times.

New dogs are typically greeted with a healthy dose of skepticism, dramatic commentary, and careful observation. Once Jeff has decided they're trustworthy and willing to play, however, they're officially part of the club. That's when the wrestling matches, zoomies, and roughhousing begin.

Underneath all the grumbles and opinions is a deeply loyal dog who loves his people, his pack, and being involved in absolutely everything.

Meet the family

The founding family of Barkley & Co includes Leo (14 yo), Reid (12yo) and Laine (9yo). They were raised with animals and have developed a lot of pack savvy over the years. They have played and snuggled more pups than any other kids we know! We also share our home with a Western Hermann’s tortoise Mr. Pickles, a Syrian hamster Todd, and four backyard chickens named Outlet, Charger, Watermelon, and Penguin.

Over the span of decades, Ashley has provided a home for many dogs and animals. We think fondly of our friends over the rainbow bridge — namesake golden retriever Barkley, miniature pinscher Dauber, American shorthair cat TJ, Italian greyhound Sandy, Italian greyhound Oliver, rats Poppy and Rose, and retired racing greyhound Edie 🖤
